Olympic Gold Medalist, Stanley Cup champion and Anaheim Ducks legend Ryan Getzlaf has joined the ranks of this year’s star-studded Hockey Night in Brampton charity game.

The third-annual charity match-up is less than a week away with Toronto Maple Leaf veterans Wendel Clark and Doug Gilmore return to coach two teams of all-stars in support of the William Osler Health System’s cardiac care and upgrade of Peel Memorial Centre.

This year’s game will see teammates become opponents for one night only when Maple Leafs’ stars Max Domi and Mitch Marner square off on opposing teams, and the city announced Getzlaf as the latest big name to sign on this week.

“A two-time Olympic gold medalist and Stanley Cup champion, Getzlaf is known for his playmaking ability, strong physical presence and leadership on and off the ice,” the city said in a release. “His participation in Hockey Night in Brampton adds yet another layer of excitement to an already dynamic roster.”

Getzlaf was a captain for Anaheim and played his entire career with the Ducks, and is the team’s all-time leader in games played (1,157), assists (737) and points (1,017). He played a key role in Anaheim winning their first Stanley Cup in 2007 and is the franchise’s all-time playoff leader in goals (37), assists (83) and points (120).

Members of the newly-landed Brampton Steelheads will also take to the ice for this year’s Hockey Night in Brampton game following their move from Mississauga, including Steelheads goaltenders Jack Ivankovic and Ryerson Leenders.

Hockey Night in Brampton was launched by Mayor Patrick Brown in 2019 and has since raised over $1.4 million for the Osler Foundation with $1 million going towards the new Peel Memorial Hospital and over $400,000 supporting cardiac care.

Last year’s event raised a record-breaking $1 million for the William Osler Health System’s upgrade of Peel Memorial and another $1 million for the John Tavares Foundation, and this year the city says it hopes to break that record and raise even more funds.

Hockey Night in Brampton returns to the CAA Centre on Aug. 21. For more information, to buy tickets or to find out about sponsorship opportunities visit www.hockeynightbrampton.ca.
