After serving as the assistant coach for six years, Brock University graduate Jac Harris was recently picked as the new Track and Field coach for the Badgers.

And she is keenly aware of the impact her hiring will mean to female athletes.

“In a male-dominated field, I think female leadership and representation is important,” Harris told the campus newspaper, The Brock News, “and I’m happy to be among many fantastic women coaching sport.”

The 2014 Kinesiology graduate has been with the track and field program since collecting her Honours BA at the St Catharines university. As a student-athlete, she was named MVP twice for the track squad.

Before that, she was a Beamsville District Secondary School student who went to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Track and Field Championships five times, winning a silver and bronze in the 400M dash.

Brock’s Director of Sports Melissa Krist noted of Harris’ appointment, “It is important for us to continue to provide leadership for our student-athletes that provides gender equity and diversity.”
