Yesterday’s (August 10) announcement from the federal Minister of Innovation, François-Philippe Champagne that Canada would be getting a Moderna lab built here in the future came as welcome news to St Catharines MP Chris Bittle.

“Today’s agreement with Moderna will position Canada as an mRNA centre of excellence and global mRNA research and development hub,” posted Bittle on social media.

“We promised that we would help rebuild our vaccine manufacturing capabilities and Budget 2021 committed $2.2 billion to that goal.”

Canada was behind the eight-ball when COVID-19 vaccination manufacturing began due to the fact that there were no manufacturers on home soil.

Only through the efforts of Oakville MP Anita Anand, the federal Minister of Public Services And Procurement, who worked tirelessly to get vaccines into Canada, was the country able to shift from the lowest number of vaccinations right up to the top of the list world-wide in recent months.

At the moment, 80 per cent of Canadian have had at least one jab while 64 per cent are fully vaccinated, the best numbers in the world.

Bittle added, “The (Moderna) facility will be built within two years but a location hasn’t been finalized. This will be the third vaccine manufacturing facility to be announced since the pandemic. The first will open in Montreal this autumn.”
