St. Catharines Athletics are your 2021 Ontario Junior Lacrosse League champs after outlasting Brampton 14-13 in the Iroquois Cup final.

St. Catharines put up a nine-spot in the middle stanza and withstood a furious Brampton rally in the third not win the league championship, with all games played at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville.

For most junior lacrosse players – many NLL draft-eligible this year – it was their first game action since the 2019 season.

St. Catharines finished 6-2 in the west division and squeezed by Mimico 7-6 to get to the cup final, with Carter Zavitz scoring the winner with 1:54 left.

Whitby Warriors (7-1) played Brampton Excelsiors (6-2) in the other semi, with Brampton winning 8-7. The Excelsiors led 5-0 midway through the second and 8-4 with less than four minutes left. Whitby scored three times – two by Shawn Westlery – in those final minutes before running out of clock.

The tournament-style OJLL season got underway July 24.

The OJLL was established in 1933 and has 11 teams in southern Ontario. It is widely considered the most competitive junior men’s lacrosse league in the world.
