Sports legend hosts free youth soccer festival in Brampton

A soccer legend from Brampton hosts a two-day festival in the city this month.

The Atiba Hutchinson “13 Great Assists” Soccer Festival comes to Century Gardens on May 17 and 18, Councillor Rowena Santos announced.

Born in Brampton, Hutchinson is a former Canadian professional soccer player who is considered a soccer legend in Canada. With 105 international appearances in the span of 20 years, he is the Canadian national team’s record cap holder.

“It’s an honour to support Brampton’s own, Atiba Hutchinson, who continues to inspire and give back to our community with events like this one at Century Gardens,” said Santos.

“Just like our Atiba #13, we are calling on our youth to give back to community and participate in the passion of soccer. I encourage all youth soccer clubs and players to complete their acts of kindness and join Atiba at this free event to give back by learning new skills in the community and on the field.”

The festival concept of “13 Great Assists” represents Atiba’s jersey number, and the assists celebrate the good deeds young participants will perform in their communities, according to the announcement.

The youth will be encouraged to complete a bingo card with “acts of kindness” to “learn the importance of giving back, cultivating habits that build character and goodwill.”

The festival activities are designed to inspire generosity, teamwork and social responsibility, the organizers state.

“This blend of sport and service aims to plant the seeds of lifelong benevolence, encouraging youth to recognize the power they hold to effect positive change,” the announcement states.

Festival activities include soccer challenges, a splash pad and a DJ.

The free event is at Century Gardens Recreation Centre, 340 Vodden St. E. on May 17 and 18. There was no further information on timing.
