Speed limit on section of Red Hill to be reduced next week: City of Hamilton

Starting Monday (May 17) the speed limit on a portion of the Red Hill Valley Parkway (RHVP) will drop from 90 km/hr to 80 km/hr.
Both directions of the roadway between Greenhill Ave and Dartnall Road will be affected by the change and the City of Hamilton said that police will be enforcing the reduced speed limit.
“Hamilton Police Services will be enforcing the new speed limit for the entire length of the RHVP beginning Monday, May 17, 2021,” a city press release issued Thursday (May 13) said.
“At this time, the speed limit on the northbound lanes of the RHVP shifts from 90km/hr to 80km/hr on a downhill section, which can make it difficult for motorists and drivers of large trucks to slow down effectively. Changing the speed limit to 80km/hr beginning at the top of the hill will facilitate compliance with the posted speed limit.”
The RHVP north of Greenhill Ave is already set at 80km/hr, so the change means that the speed limit on the entire length of the RHVP will now be 80km/hr between the Linc and QEW.
Parts of the RHVP will be closed over the weekend as crews work to install the new signage.

The speed limit on the highway was lowered in the spring of 2019 when a report from 2013 that measured the friction of the RHVP surfaced and indicated that the asphalt on “nearly all areas of the [RHVP] have friction values below or well below” the recommended level.
Since 2012 and up until the time the report surfaced, there were seven fatalities from collisions on the RHVP and numerous serious injuries.
Since 2019, the City has repaved the road and its on-ramps and even after wrapping up the massive project, maintained the 80km/hr speed limit between Greenhill and the QEW to improve safety along the corridor.
