Speed cameras in Halton Hills will be delayed for at least a year

The inability of the local court system to handle new cases will delay the Town of Halton Hills from implementing its speed cameras for at least a year.

According to a report presented at this week’s Town council meeting, before starting the Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) program, staff had to confirm the local court system could deal with the anticipated increase in cases.

Municipalities that currently operate the ASE program prosecute violations through the Provincial Offences Act (POA) court services.

In Halton Region, Halton Court Services (HCS) is the provincial offences court providing court administration and prosecution of provincial offences to the Region and area municipalities within the region.

However, HCS has advised the Town that it does not have sufficient capacity to process any ASE offences.

The Town’s ASE program is now expected to be delayed until spring 2024.

However, staff are continuing with the implementation of the 20 Community Safety Zones to support ASE this year.

In addition, the pre-data required by MTO to allow ASE to be implemented will be collected at all potential ASE locations.

Also, to promote the upcoming ASE program, Transportation and Communications staff are working to develop a website and communication strategy.
