City looks to ‘repurpose’ speed cameras in Brampton after Ontario-wide ban

An Ontario city has paused issuing speed camera fines just a month and a half after its cameras went live.

The City of Vaughan confirmed to INsauga.com that new fines associated with the program were paused as of June 4 at 5 p.m.

“Since the City’s automated speed enforcement cameras went live in April, feedback on its implementation continues to be received and reviewed,” the City said in a statement.

A program update was brought to officials at a meeting on June 4.

“At that meeting, Vaughan council ratified a motion by Mayor Steven Del Duca to pause the issuance of fines associated with this program while it is reviewed throughout the summer to enhance its implementation,” the City said.

Now, instead of fines, warning notices will be issued to the registered owners of vehicles that are captured travelling above the speed limit.

It’s not clear when exactly fines may start to be issued again.

Staff are set to report back to council in September “with consideration given to improved signage, the implementation of pavement markings, and options related to warning notices, among others,” the City said.

“Issuance of further fines will not be reinstated until council has approved a new implementation plan.”

Tickets issued prior to June 4 at 5 p.m. remain valid, the City’s website says.

Vaughan implemented speed cameras that went live on April 23 in 10 locations. The cameras are in addition to some that were already in Vaughan on select regional roads as part of a separate program from York Region.

Only the City of Vaughan’s program has been paused, the City said.
