It’s not surprising these days to see a local library house a 3D printer, but the technology has rapidly evolved to become something that goes beyond creating novelty items to providing practical uses.
When you hear how 3D printing has been used in manufacturing and medical breakthroughs such as creating a new ear or heart valve for a patient, it’s not surprising that there is serious investment in the technology.
The Ontario government announced that they are partnering with a company named Burloak Technologies to build a new world-leading 3D printing centre in Oakville, creating 65 new jobs and retaining 16 positions.

Burloak is a division of Samuel, Son & Company.
Burloak Technologies designs and creates 3D metal and plastic parts for a range of industries including aerospace, defense, energy, medical, automotive and transportation.
With support from the province’s Jobs and Prosperity Fund, Burloak will build a new facility and invest in new technology. This will help the company scale up and reach new markets by developing innovative designs, improving its manufacturing processes and introducing new products, according to the press release.
Burlington MPP Eleanor McMahon made the announcement in Burlington on May 4.
The province’s investment is $7 million, the federal government is giving $14 million and Burloak themselves are investing $80 million.
The project is scheduled for completion by December 2022.
“This announcement is proof that Oakville is a great place to do business. The expansion was not only made possible by the continued investment by our government, but also thanks to the amazing workforce in Oakville, further solidifying it as a true hub of innovation and manufacturing,” said Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn.
