There’s a new way to get paid for your old electronic devices in Ontario.
Electronics recycler ecoATM announced this week that it has officially launched in Canada through a partnership with Walmart.
The company operates self-serve kiosks where individuals can trade in their old devices for instant cash.
A news release said that the initial launch in Canada includes 13 kiosks in the Greater Toronto Area.
They’re located in select Walmart stores in Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville and Burlington.
EcoATM said there are plans for further expansion in Canada.
Canadians generated nearly one million tonnes of e-waste in 2020, with that expected to grow to 1.2 million tonnes per year by 2030, the company said.
“Our mission is to empower consumers to give their old devices a second life while benefiting financially,” ecoATM chief executive officer Matt Furlong said.
“By refurbishing used electronics and keeping them out of landfills, we create a model that works for both people and the planet.”
There are more than 6,500 ecoATM kiosks in the United States and to date, more than 50 million devices have been collected.
This year, the company said it’s hoping to recycle 7.5 million devices across North America.
