Some roads still closed in Clarington after storm takes down trees, power lines

While most of southern Durham Region was spared the brunt of thunderstorms and heavy rain that hit parts north Tuesday, communities along the lake did have to endure high winds powerful enough to take down trees and power lines.

Several roads in Clarington were closed Tuesday while crews cleaned up the mess, including Nash Road between Holt Road and Maple Grove Road, Lambs Road between Bethesda and Concession Street East, Concession Road 3 between Mearns Avenue and Bragg Road and Sandringham Drive between Stirling Avenue and Strathallan Drive.

The Municipality of Clarington is reporting that Nash Road, Lambs Road and Concession Road 3 have reopened to traffic. Sandringham Drive between Stirling Avenue and Strathallan Drive remains closed.

These closures are expected to remain in place overnight as crews work to restore access. Residents are asked to avoid these areas and use alternate local routes.

The notice will be updated as more information about road reopenings becomes available.

Residents are also asked to report it “right away” on the Service Clarington Portal if a downed tree is spotted on municipal property or roadway. The information can also be relayed by phone during business hours at (905) 623-3379 ext. 2661, or for urgent after hours calls at (905) 433-1234.

Environment Canada issued thunderstorm warnings for northern Durham Tuesday, including Beaverton, Sunderland and Uxbridge, with winds of as much as 90 k/hr and rainfall accumulation of as much as 80 millimetres.

The warning was yellow-coded, which means the weather may cause property damage or have health impacts.
