One of the tallest housing complexes in Brampton is inching closer to approval.
If it does come to fruition, the complex will be built across from Shoppers World Brampton.
The four buildings, ranging from 45 to 50 storeys, are slated for the south side of Steeles Avenue, just west of Hurontario Street/Main Street, and include 1,900 residential units with ground floor space available for shops and other commercial business uses.
A Brampton planning department report outlining the proposal will go before a city committee next week.
An earlier application proposed just two buildings on the site, but the plan has since been revised to now include buildings of 45, 46, 49 and 50 storeys.
Currently, the 1.91-hectare site contains a single home and is now considered under-utilized based on its location and growth in the surrounding area.
“The development offers a range of one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units that will serve a diverse range of income levels and age groups,” the report reads. “Furthermore, the proposed development will provide direct access to existing and future transit service
while providing a pedestrian-friendly site design that will encourage active transportation and strong streetscapes.”
As well as access to the shopping mall, those who would live in the buildings would be within walking distance of the Hazel McCallion LRT line.
The report goes on to point out that the proposed site fits in with the plan for the area, which calls to accommodate the highest population density in Brampton. Further, even though the plan for the area originally targeted heights of 25 storeys, the larger size proposed has been deemed appropriate to meet the growth demands of the city.
There are still several planning hurdles the project has to clear before it can proceed and will ultimately have to be approved by city council.
