Some Oakville workers could lose jobs as Ford Motor plans to lay off 3,000 employees

Ford Motor, which has an assembly plant in Oakville, plans to cut roughly 3,000 workers as the automobile maker makes a transition to electric vehicles.

According to Automotive News, an internal email was sent to employees on Monday (Aug. 22) notifying them of the layoffs, which will affect salaried and contract workers, mostly in North America and India.

Earlier this year, Ford began a restructuring and cost-cutting effort. In March, the automobile company announced plans to split its electric vehicles and internal combustion engine vehicles into two units.

Ford CEO Jim Farley said in July that cost reduction in combustion operations would happen.

Ford’s Oakville plan could produce up to five Lincoln electric SUVs. Production of the vehicles are expected to being rolling off the line in late 2024 or early 2025.
