Some Mississauga voters will have a federal election this year

A by-election will be held this year to fill the vacant seat in the federal riding of Mississauga-Lakeshore.

Canada’s Chief Electoral Officer, Stéphane Perrault, recently received official notice of the vacancy when Liberal MP Sven Spengemann stepped down to take a position with the United Nations.

Spengemann has held the House of Commons seat since 2015.

According to Elections Canada, the by-election must be announced between June 10 and November 26 of this year and the campaign period must last at least 36 days but no more than 50 days. The earliest days for the by-election to be held is Monday, July 18.

The last federal election was held in September of 2021 where Spengemann was re-elected.

    25,284 votes
  • Michael Ras – Conservative
    21,761 votes
  • Sarah Walji – NDP
    5,488 votes
  • Vahid Seyfaie – People’s Party
    2,367 votes
  • Elizabeth Robertson – Green
    1,265 votes
  • Kayleigh Tahk – Rino
    94 votes
