Social media meet-ups lead to kidnapping and robbery charges in Brampton

Arranged meet-ups on social media that ended in violence, robberies and kidnapping have led to charges for two men from Mississauga and Brampton, police say.

The three incidents happened between April and May of this year when Peel Regional Police say suspects used social media platforms “to arrange in-person meetings under false pretenses.”

Police say that victims were “met with violence” during the meet-ups and their property was stolen.

Two of the victims were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police say.

An investigation has led to the arrest of two men from Mississauga and Brampton on Saturday, but police believe there are additional suspects still at large.

Peel Regional Police say Abhijot Singh, 20, of Brampton, and Ridhampreet Singh, 21, of Mississauga, have been charged with kidnapping, robbery with a firearm and fraud. Abhijot has also been charged with an additional count each of kidnapping and robbery with a firearm, and one count of robbery.

The accused were both held for a bail hearing in Brampton.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact investigators at 905-453-2121 extension 2133. Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.

When you contact Crime Stoppers you stay anonymous, never have to testify, and could receive a $2,000 reward.

The incidents have led Peel Regional Police to remind community members “to exercise caution when arranging to meet individuals they have met online.”

Here are some tips from PRP to remember when meeting someone in person:

  • Always meet in public places, especially during the initial meeting.
  • Inform a friend or family member of your plans, including the location and time of your meeting.
  • Verify the identity of individuals through video calls or other means before agreeing to meet in person.
  • Trust your instincts—if something feels off, do not proceed.
  • Report any suspicious or criminal behaviour to law enforcement.
