Sobeys is launching a new Smart Cart that is intended to make shopping easier, more fun, and less stressful.

One of the worst parts about going shopping is standing in line (especially when you get stuck behind someone who has decided to price match everything in their cart). However, Sobeys’ new carts are intended to streamline the entire shopping process.

The carts’ innovative technology weighs and scans items as shoppers put them in the cart, adds up the prices and displays a total amount, and allows shoppers to pay for their groceries on the spot without having to wait in line.

“While products and customer eating habits have evolved, the in-store grocery shopping experience has remained relatively static for the last 100 years.” Mathieu Lacoursiere, vice president of retail support at Sobeys Inc, said in a news release.

“This is a unique way for us to test innovative new technologies aimed at enhancing the customer shopping experience and learn how best to make it faster and easier. The carts will also give our in-store teammates more time to interact with customers and answer questions about food and new products,” he continued.

The carts will also be equipped with an AI feature that will assist shoppers with navigating the store and help them locate all the items on their grocery list.

According to the available data, 52 per cent of Canadians feel their grocery-store experience would be improved significantly if they could more quickly navigate the store.

“Sobeys is an innovative grocer with a strong focus on enhancing the shopper experience,” Ahmed Beshry, co-founder and CBO of Caper, the technology partner behind the Sobeys Smart Cart, said.

“The Sobeys Team has incredible execution capabilities. When retailers are able to pick up a new technology and execute quickly, it creates the right environment for rapid innovation,” he continued.
