It looks like it may be a white Christmas after all for residents in Hamilton.

Environment Canada recently announced that a special weather statement is in effect for the City of Hamilton.

The weather agency says that a snowfall of 10 to 20 cm is expected tonight (Dec 24) and will accumulate quickly.

Environment Canada says temperatures will fall this afternoon and rain will transition to snow.

Residents should also expect freezing during the transition.

By this evening, the snow may become heavy at times with snowfall rates of two to three cm per hour that will continue overnight which should ease into scattered flurries by Friday (Dec 25) morning.

Environment Canada says some uncertainty remains regarding total snowfall amounts, however, most of the Niagara Region and areas on the west side should expect 15 cm.

Residents should expect poor road conditions due to black ice and snow accumulation which may make it difficult to travel over to some locations.
