Residents of Hamilton whose regularly scheduled garbage day is Tuesday are being warned to expect delays as City crews still work to clear away the leavings of Monday’s winter storm.

In a Tweet issued Tuesday morning (Jan. 18), the City said waste collection will resume today, the day after the service was cancelled due to weather.

Those whose waste collection was cancelled Monday will be able to put out one extra bag of garbage without a tag on their next regularly scheduled pick-up day (Monday, Jan. 24).

Hamiltonians continue to dig their way out from under the more than 40 cm of snow that was dumped on the city Monday, which forced the closure of schools and businesses and created traffic and transit chaos in and around Hamilton and beyond.

After declaring a ‘significant weather event’ Monday evening, a designation that suspends the standard timelines for cities to meet their winter maintenance objectives, City crews now have more time to work on snow removal and are expected to be out in full force on Tuesday.

Schools open/closed

Schools are closed for in-person learning for the second day in a row, in Hamilton, due to the weather. Early Tuesday, both the public and Catholic school boards announced that buses would be cancelled and schools.

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) has cancelled online classes but the Hamilton-Wentworth District Catholic District School Board (HWCDSB) said elementary virtual school classes would resume and for in-person students, asynchronous content would be posted by 10 a.m. Tuesday morning

Post-secondary institutions in Hamilton, however, have opted to remain open on Tuesday.

Mohawk College remains open for regularly scheduled classes — in-person and remote, where it applies — as does McMaster University.
