An explosion is being cited as the possible cause of a fire in Waterdown which caused smoke to be seen in large areas of Burlington this morning.

According to Hamilton fire officials, the suspected explosion and resulting fire caused $1 million in damage to a home on Highway 6 near Concession 4 West at around 7 a.m.

Residents in nearby Burlington reported that clouds of smoke could be seen for long periods.

Fire officials report that when they arrived at the scene they were met with fire and heavy smoke coming from the home.

There was nobody in the house at the time.

Reports say two vehicles parked in the driveway were also damaged.

Indications later in the day revealed that a large wall had been blown out signalling a potential explosion.

While it took a short time to bring the fire under control, firefighters remained on the scene for several hours.

Portions of Highway 6 were closed to traffic for several hours while emergency crews were on the scene.
