A small fire inside a 30-storey condo tower on the main drag in downtown Hamilton required rush-hour traffic detours — but there were no injuries or serious damage.
Shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 15), people in the downtown could see smoke emanating out of the Cobalt Luxury Residences On King, which are under construction along King St. E. between Hughson and John streets. But arriving Hamilton Fire Department crews used a ladder to get into the building and quickly doused the blaze.
“This was a small fire on the (fifth) floor of a high-rise under construction,” Assistant Deputy Chief Ryan Coburn said. “Crews quickly extinguished it. It appeared to be construction materials.”
Getting trucks on to King required the Hamilton Police to block off the street at John St., to Hughson.
