A driver fell asleep at the wheel on a highway in Mississauga last night (Sept 4) and collided with a guard rail before coming to rest in the ditch.

Overnight, members of Mississauga OPP were called to the scene of a single vehicle collision on a portion of Hwy. 401/403.

The driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel before hitting a guard rail on the side of the highway. Police do not specify where on the highway the collision occurred.

The vehicle sustained significant front-end damage and came to rest in the ditch.

Police say the driver was charged with impaired driving as well as careless driving. The name and age of the driver were not released.

Motorists are reminded to take breaks during long trips to reduce the risk of falling asleep while driving.
