Although winter might compel most people to hibernate in their homes and dream of spring, it’s definitely not something that should restrict you to your home indefinitely.

Although winter might compel most people to hibernate in their homes and dream of spring, it’s definitely not something that should restrict you to your home indefinitely.

If you want to be more active this winter, you might be happy to know that Brampton offers skating and shinny programs for residents who want to indulge in some fun winter sports.

If you’re starting from scratch, you can connect with a Learn to Skate instructor who will teach the basics during a group lesson. According to the city, the lessons are designed to “create an environment for ice orientation as well as having a fun experience learning new skating skills.”

If you just want to show up for a skating day or shinny match, you can find a list of drop-in opportunities here.

As far as participating recreation centres you go, you can skate and enjoy some fun shinny matches at Cassie Campbell, Century Gardens, Greenbriar, Memorial Arena and more.

If you or your child is learning to skate, there a few rules and safety tips to keep in mind. According to the city, Canadian Standards Association (CSA) helmets are mandatory and full face masks are recommended. Single blade skates are the only ones permitted on the ice and participants are required to wear gloves or mittens and snowpants are mandatory for preschool participants and recommended for skaters of all ages.

Powerskating participants must wear full hockey equipment, including a CSA hockey helmet with a full face mask.

Skating days may not be held on certain holidays or when a special event or routine maintenance is planned.
