SIU terminates investigation in regard to a police-involved shooting in Brampton

On September 16, 2019, a shootout that was reportedly gang-related, took place on Highway 410 in the area of Sandalwood Parkway in Brampton, where Peel Regional Police (PRP) was dispatched to the scene. 

While two officers were heading northbound on the highway in their police truck, a tow truck driver flagged them down, as he had come across a white Honda sedan in a ditch on the east side of the highway, south of Sandalwood Parkway. 

The Honda sedan contained a male with bullet wounds and the vehicle had also been struck by bullets. Another male in the same area as the sedan had been shot as well.

Officers observed a black Audi SUV at the scene and blocked its path when they became aware that the driver was possibly armed with a firearm before the driver reversed his SUV and struck the tow truck.

One of the officers then discharged five rounds at the SUV from his sidearm after exiting through the front passenger side of the police truck, as it reversed further and accelerated northbound on the highway.

Peel Police located the abandoned SUV around Geddes Lane and Checkerberry Crescent, where it had been struck with bullets four times.

Interim Director Martino said, “The police shooting was reported to the SIU by police, and the SIU invoked its jurisdiction based on information that the driver of the SUV, and any possible passengers, might have been struck by police gunfire.”

“However, after forensic examination of the SUV, it appears that no one inside the vehicle, whomever he, she or they may have been, was struck by any of the bullets; there was no indication of any bullet penetration into the interior of the vehicle, nor did the SUV’s interior contain any blood.” 

“Accordingly, as the evidence suggests that no one was seriously injured or killed by the police firearm discharges, the SIU is without statutory jurisdiction to proceed with its investigation. Accordingly, the investigation is hereby discontinued, and the file closed,” he added.
