While details were still scarce this morning (Oct. 24), the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says that the man who was shot by police in St. Catharines allegedly came at them with a knife.

Police were called to a home on Melody Trail near Arthur Street around 9 p.m. Monday (Oct. 23).

Authorities initially said there was “an interaction between uniformed patrol officers and a male suspect” that ended with the man being shot by police.

However, the opening statement of the SIU case states: “Officers were at the front door of the residence when the man approached with a knife. Two officers shot the man.”

It is important to note that the SIU investigation has not yet begun so there could be other circumstances at play in the incident.

Police did say while lifesaving measures were performed by paramedics, the man died of his injuries.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow (Oct. 25).
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
