The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal police-involved shooting of 26-year-old D’Andre Campbell in Brampton that occurred

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal police-involved shooting of 26-year-old D’Andre Campbell in Brampton that occurred on April 6, 2020. 

The four Peel Regional Police (PRP) officers, who were designated as witness officers, have all been interviewed.

Additionally, SIU investigators have interviewed family members and the subject officer was invited for an interview, but he has not yet provided notes or submitted to the interview.

Pursuant to Ontario Regulation 267/10 of the Police Services Act, subject officers cannot be legally compelled to present themselves for an interview with the SIU.

They also do not have to submit their notes to the SIU.

SIU investigators recovered a knife from the scene and two conducted energy weapons and firearm-related evidence.

The SIU also took possession of the subject officer’s firearm.

Many of these items of evidence were submitted for analysis to the Centre of Forensic Sciences.

The SIU is awaiting the report after the post-mortem was conducted.

The SIU appreciates the public interest in this case and is doing what it can to get answers to the public as quickly as possible while also ensuring that the integrity of the investigation is not compromised.  

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid depending on the evidence and report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
