Sinkhole collapses parking lot at Oshawa medical building

A medical building on Simcoe Street in Oshawa remains closed while the ‘structural integrity’ is assessed after a sinkhole collapsed the surface parking lot into the underground garage.

The sinkhole caused a water main to rupture, leading to flooding outside the building, with some damage reported inside the Oshawa Health Centre as well, located at the northeast corner of Simcoe Street and Adelaide Avenue, right across the street from Parkwood Estate.

The intersection was temporarily closed and power and gas were shut off while engineers assessed the safety of the situation, said Durham Police spokesperson Kristie Jones.

Police responded to an assist fire call at 8 a.m. Saturday after the surface parking lot collapsed. “This likely caused a water main to the building to break leading to flooding. Power and gas, as well as a lane on Simcoe Street North and access to Adelaide Street were closed for safety,” she said.

“No injuries have been reported. The buildings’ structural integrity is being assessed.”

The power and gas are now restored and all lanes, as well as the sidewalk, are open, though the building, which hosts a lab, x-ray and ultrasound offices and other medical practices, remains closed.

Patients at the medical centre will need to call or check the clinic socials for updates or changes to appointments.

The building, which offers more than 16,000 total square feet – including 4,600 square feet of clinic space – was listed for sale in October for $7.195 million.
