A sinkhole has opened up in the middle of one of Oshawa’s busier roads, closing the artery to traffic just as the after work rush hour begins.

Durham Police announced the sinkhole via social media around 4:50 p.m. The hole appeared on Harmony Rd between Adelaide Ave E to the south and Copperfield Dr to the north.

The Harmon and Adelaide intersection is home to businesses, a high school and Easton Park. Meanwhile Copperfield leads into a suburban area. Across Harmony from there in Gebe St which also leads into suburbia.

The half-kilometre stretch of Harmony between the two intersections is lined mostly with green space.

Durham Police had no estimate as to when traffic may reopen. Drivers can avoid the area by taking Wilson Rd to the east which runs parallel to Harmony.
