The Simcoe Street Bridge in Oshawa will be closed this weekend from 9 p.m. Friday to Monday, May 6 at 6 a.m. to prepare for the demolition of the second half of the bridge May 11-12.

The bridge closure this weekend will be from Bloor Street to the westbound on-ramp and closure of the eastbound Simcoe Street off-ramp. This closure is also to prepare the area for traffic to use the newly created half of the bridge.

Detour routes will be in place on the weekend to divert the vehicle traffic around the closed portion of Simcoe Street.

  • Highway 401 eastbound off-ramp: Drivers can exit at Stevenson Street eastbound off-ramp or at the Ritson Street eastbound off-ramp.
  • Northbound traffic on Simcoe Street:Traffic will be detoured west on Bloor Street to Stevenson Road where they will head north and then head east on Gibb Street to Simcoe St. S.
  • Southbound traffic on Simcoe Street: Traffic will be detoured east on Olive Avenue to Ritson Rd. S. where it will head south.

Access to the Highway 401 westbound on-ramp from Simcoe St. N. will remain open throughout the closure and signage will be installed before the closure to notify the public.

The closures are all part of the replacement of both the Simcoe Street and Albert Street bridges by the Ministry of Transportation which began last year, along with other bridges along the Highway 401 corridor.

The overnight demolition work on the Simcoe Street Bridge the following weekend will start Saturday, May 11 at 11 p.m. and last until Sunday, May 12 at 7 a.m. Some lane closures on the highway will occur from Saturday at 9 p.m., with traffic fully reopened by Sunday at 9 a.m.
