Sidewalk detours and patio setup to begin this week in Burlington

To prepare for the City of Burlington’s patio program reopening, sidewalk detours and patio setup will begin this week.
Prior to the Provincial Stay-at-Home Order earlier this year, Burlington City Council approved the temporary patio program for the 2021 patio season.
Additionally, council approved speeding up the approval process for 2020 temporary patio permit holders to allow their permits to be renewed based on patio approvals from last year. Application fees for the 2021 temporary patio program are also being waived to help businesses recover amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
This week, some patios will begin to be installed on city sidewalks and these sections will be detoured onto the road with traffic barriers that will help with social distancing and keeping pedestrians safe.
The sidewalk detours for patios are being installed in downtown Burlington on the north side of Pine Street between Elizabeth Street and Pearl Street, the east side of John Street between Pine Street and Lakeshore Road, the north side of Lakeshore Road between Brant Street and John Street and the north side of Lakeshore Road between Locust Street and Brant Street.
They are also being installed on the west side of Brant Street between Elgin Street and Lakeshore Road, the east side of Locust Street between Elgin Street and Lakeshore Road, the west side of Brant Street between Maria Street and Caroline Street, the east side of Brant Street between Maria Street and James Street and the north side of Elgin Street between Locust Street and Brant Street.

“As we come out of the third wave and enter the second summer of COVID-19 restrictions, I have heard loud and clear from our hospitality operators that they are ready to re-open. We must do everything we can to support our downtown businesses and I was pleased to support City Council’s approval of the patio program again this summer,” said Ward 2 City Councillor, Lisa Kearns.
“I know from my work as the Council liaison to the Burlington Downtown Business Association (BDBA), that I am not the only one who is looking forward to seeing patios start to ‘pop up’ around the city. We are all working together so our local businesses can be ready to open once we enter Stage 1 of the Province’s new COVID Framework.”
As long as public health measures will allow, the patio program will run until October 31, 2021.
