Residents can bring confidential documents to shred for free at an upcoming Mississauga event.

Peel Crime Stoppers hosts their annual drive-thru shredding event on Saturday, Sept. 16.

The event, held in collaboration with Blue Pencil Information Security, Meridian Credit Union and Peel Regional Police, allows people to shred confidential documents so they are destroyed securely.

Proper document destruction can help prevent identity theft, Blue Pencil notes on their website. Although fraudsters target online information these days, identity theft and the leaking of sensitive data can still occur through paper form.

Shredding is also important for business owners as laws require organizations to properly dispose of their data. Many businesses are concerned with keeping trade information private and keeping sensitive information protected.

People can bring documents to the shredding event on Saturday Sept. 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Peel Regional Police Emil V. Kolb Centre at 180 Derry Rd. E., Mississauga.
