Cyclist dies after collision in Belleville area

One person was killed and two others injured in a shooting at a college campus bar overnight in Ontario.

Sarnia police said that officers were called to a Lambton College campus bar at 12:52 a.m. Friday for a report of gunfire.

Three people were found injured: one with life-threatening injuries and two with non-life-threatening injuries.

The individual who was critically injured — a 20-year-old man from Sarnia — was taken to Bluewater Health.

He was later pronounced dead.

The other two victims are also adults.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

“Initial police response was extensive, with all available patrol units responding,” police said.

“Once a firearm was confirmed, the emergency response team and K9 attended, searching for any additional suspects, victims, or weapons. Concurrent to that activity, SPS investigators were interviewing a large number of witnesses and gathering evidence from all available sources.”

Police said investigators remain at the scene and are expected to be there “for an extended period, given the serious nature of the incident and the volume of evidence to be processed.”

“Various investigative techniques and resources are being utilized to identify and locate the involved suspect(s),” officers said.

“In order to prevent any misinformation or speculation, no information has been received that this incident targeted Lambton College or the general crowd in attendance,” police added.

“There is also no information to support any speculation of political motivation in any form.”

Event was happening when shooting occurred: college

In a statement posted on social media, Lambton College said that a student administrative council event was happening at the bar, located on the Sarnia Main Campus, when the shooting happened.

Lambton College’s website says that the student administrative council “is responsible for organizing social events throughout the year,” providing opportunities for students to meet new people.

“This loss is a profound tragedy,” the statement said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the individual’s family, loved ones and friends and to everyone affected by this staggering loss. Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this senseless act of violence.”

The Sarnia campus is closed on Friday.

“This closure is inclusive of all classes and services at the Main Campus, Fire School, Skilled Trades Training Centre, EarlyON Child & Family Centre, Community Employment Services, and Capstone’s Bistro. The Ottawa Campus is not impacted. We ask our community to please avoid campus,” the statement said.

“We continue to work closely with Sarnia Police Service as they investigate,” it added, while thanking emergency crews for their response.

Anyone with information or video footage was asked to contact police at 519-344-8861.
