Nickel sized hail; Severe weather warning in effect in South Ontario

Some very stormy weather is in the forecast for later this afternoon and evening (May 20.)

If you’ve planned to head outdoors today with family and friends to celebrate Victoria Day—it looks like it will rain on your parade, (quite literally) as Environment Canada has called for a severe thunderstorm affecting the following areas:

  • Mississauga
  • Brampton
  • Caledon
  • Halton
  • Milton
  • Malton
  • Acton
  • Georgetown
  • Woodbridge
  • Speyside
  • Norval
  • Hornby
  • Mayfield
  • Meadowvale
  • Wildfield
  • Kleinburg
  • Lester B. Pearson International Airport
  • Downsview

As of 6:25 p.m., residents are asked to prepare themselves for strong gusts of wind, nickel-sized hail, and heavy rain.

“Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Locally heavy rain is also possible,” the statement read.

According to Environment Canada, lightning kills and injures Canadians every year, and residents are being reminded to take cover with the saying, “When thunder roars, go indoors!”

Emergency Management Ontario also recommends that individuals immediately find a safe place to shelter from threatening weather conditions.

Individuals are asked to continue to monitor alerts and updates from Environment Canada.
