Environment Canada says severe thunderstorms could develop in Brampton and Mississauga today (July 13).

According to the weather agency, a thunderstorm watch is currently in effect for both cities.

“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon into this evening,” Environment Canada says on its website.

“These thunderstorms will be capable of producing strong wind gusts up to 100 km/h, large hail up to 2 cm in diameter and heavy rainfall of 50 mm within an hour.”

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) says the cities could also see more thunderstorms on Wednesday, July 14 with possible rainfall amounts in the 5-10mm range.

CVC also said that 5-15 mm of rainfall is possible on Friday, July 15.

CVC said that while flooding of the Credit River and its major tributaries is not expected, flooding of other bodies of water is possible and local streams and rivers could become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams.

“Children should be warned to stay away from all watercourses,” CVC said in a statement.

Environment Canada warns that large hail can damage property and cause injury and that strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles.

Residents are advised to take cover if they’re outside when a thunderstorm develops.
