Severe thunderstorm watch warns of high winds, torrential rains across Southern Ontario including Mississauga, Brampton

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Southern Ontario ranging from Niagara to Durham and including Hamilton, Brampton and Mississauga that could produce high wind speeds and torrential rain.

A bulletin issued by Environment Canada states conditions currently exist “that are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and torrential rain.”

The bulletin says we could see winds gust up to 90 km/hr and as much as 50 mm of rain could fall.

The warning is extends into this evening.

Environment Canada says the winds are strong enough to toss loose objects and the rain could lead to flash floods. Lightening is also a danger.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: Large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall. It is recommended that you take cover if any of these conditions exist.
