A severe thunderstorm warning has come across Durham Region from Pickering to Oshawa as Environment Canada expects 100 km/h winds a hail up to the size of ping pong balls.

The alert rang out at 11:30 June 16 in advance of the expected storm in the afternoon and into the evening. The storm has intensified quickly as it moved east.

The primary concerns for this storm are hail, ranging from nickel to ping pong ball sized, and 90 to 110 km/h winds. However “a tornado or two cannot be completely ruled out,” said Environment Canada.

The meteorologists say, “Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!”

Meanwhile up North in Beaverton, Environment Canada said the severe thunderstorm is located 5 kilometres southeast of Innisfil, moving east at 55 km/h bringing potentially toonie size hail and 90 km/h wind gusts.
