Update: The driver was airlifted to hospital with possible life-threatening injuries after the crash last night, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in an update this morning. But the injuries do not appear life-threatening at this time, he added.

The crash into a concrete wall happened just before 9 p.m. on Thursday (March 7).

There were three people in the vehicle. The front seat passenger was also taken to hospital. The passenger in the back seat was not injured.

The original story follows:

A serious collision closed Highway 401 in Milton for several hours last night.

The single-vehicle collision happened in the westbound lanes of Highway 401, west of Martin Street (Highway 25) in Milton, OPP said in a post on X around 10:30 p.m. yesterday (March 7).

A video of the crash aftermath shows a badly damaged vehicle.

OPP couldn’t immediately provide more information. There was no word on injuries.

The closure was in place for several hours for the investigation.

Drivers complained that they couldn’t find a way off the highway.

“You need a plan to help people get off that have been stuck here for hours,” one person wrote on X.

Others reported cars turning around to get off the highway.

Around 4 a.m., OPP announced that the highway had reopened.

The investigation is ongoing and witnesses are asked to call Mississauga OPP at 905-858-8670.
