With all of the developments in healthcare and infrastructure in Brampton, a senior care centre is about to get a major upgrade.

The Peel Manor Long Term Care centre at Main Street and Williams Parkway has been approved for redevelopment by Brampton City Council.

According to the city, the developments aim to provide enhanced care for seniors and more liveable spaces for residents by increasing capacity and adding living space for those with specialized needs.

There will also be additional Adult Day Service, with 60 spaces available to serve 75-100 participants daily.

In order to accommodate construction for the new long-term care facility, the city is giving up part of the Murray Street Park nearby.

The city has said that the Peel Manor building has reached its lifespan and is in need of major upgrades.

“It’s really a centre of excellence for seniors. Once it’s complete, the City, our seniors and our residents will benefit from increased access to healthcare and park space,” said Regional Councillor Elaine Moore, Chair of the Planning and Development Committee.

The existing building will be demolished when the facility is complete, and a portion of that land will become part of the Murray Street Park.

The new Murray Street Park will be larger than its old configuration, and feature active outdoor spaces and walking paths, complete with create greater connectivity to and from the seniors’ hub.

The Region of Peel has envisioned the area around Peel Manor to become a regional Seniors’ Services Hub.

“The redevelopment of Peel Manor shows how health partnerships can contribute to employment and improve quality of life in Brampton,” said Bob Darling, Director of Economic Development and Culture and the corporate leader responsible for the City’s Health Partnerships initiative. “Along with recent developments around Peel Memorial and the upcoming opening of ErinoakKids, we’re building great momentum in this sector.”

Brampton has been strategizing health and life sciences developments in the city, such as constructing a Health and Life Sciences cluster around the Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.

The new Peel Manor will be less than two kilometres away from that area.
