Second look at lottery ticket leads to $100,000 win for Brampton man

A Brampton man is still trying to decide what to do with his winnings after taking home $100,000 in an Encore draw last month.

After making his morning coffee, Valdez Ramsumair from Brampton decided to check the lottery numbers. The 55-year-old says he tossed his tickets aside after glancing at the numbers quickly, thinking he’d lost.

But a second look using the OLD app told a different story, showing he matched the last six out of seven numbers in the June 3 Encore draw.

“I scanned the first two and won nothing. When I checked the last one, the words ‘Big Winner’ came across my phone screen,” Ramsumair said while picking up his winnings at the OLG prize centre in Toronto.

At first, Ramsumair thought the ticket was a $1,000 prize but realized the win was actually $100,000 after double-checking the numbers.

Ramsumair said he’s still considering what to do with the life-changing amount of money, but said the win won’t change who he is.

“It’s a great feeling to win, but money isn’t everything,” he said. “It would never change who I really am.”

Encore offers 22 ways to win and can be played with most lottery games with a draw each day. OLG says it supports safe play and responsible gambling through its PlaySmart program.

The winning ticket was purchased at Petro Canada on Centre St. in Thornhill.
