Ontario is recording its second highest total of new COVID-19 cases today.

Data just released by the Ministry of Health shows 4,227 new cases across the province, the most since January when a daily total reached 4,242 new cases.

Today’s numbers are fuelled by large jumps across the Greater Toronto Area with Toronto reporting 1,663 new cases, 762 in Peel Region, 532 cases in York Region, and 247 in Durham.

Halton Region is reporting 174 new cases today and Hamilton has 83.

Health experts say the COVID variants are behind the increase which has prompted the province-wide stay-at-home order.

In the past 24-hours, 18 people have died in the province due to COVID-19.
