Search ongoing for father who fell through ice in Ontario with daughter

A search is ongoing for a missing father who fell through the ice in northern Ontario more than a week ago along with his daughter.

The girl’s body was recovered several days ago.

The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed to INsauga.com that officers are still searching daily.

The OPP said that on Dec. 29 at around 3 p.m., officers received a call for help amid reports of two people who had fallen through the ice at Pete’s Dam Park in Temiskaming Shores.

Emergency crews began a search for the two individuals. In an update on Thursday, OPP said one of them had been found deceased.

A police spokesperson told INsauga.com that the body was found not far from where they were reported have fallen through the ice, adding that the younger of the two missing individuals was the person located deceased.

Police haven’t said publicly that the pair who fell through the ice were a father and daughter.

However, in a post on Facebook shared by Member of Parliament Charlie Angus, Amanda Rickard wrote that her sister’s fiance and one of his twin daughters went through the ice.

Posts online have identified the pair as Christian and Maya Bergeron.

Maya was a student at English Catholic Central School, which is part of the Northeastern Catholic District School Board.

The OPP said they are still treating the father as a missing person “until we can confirm otherwise.”
