Scissors-wielding man threatens 79-year-old, steals car keys outside Canadian Tire store east of Toronto

A trip to the Canadian Tire in Bowmanville earlier this month turned out to be a harrowing experience for a 79-year-old woman in Bowmanville when she was threatened by a man armed with scissors who stole her car keys and attempted to drive away before bystanders came to the rescue.

Durham Regional Police responded to a robbery call at the Canadian Tire on Green Street on the afternoon of July 13 after learning a woman had been approached outside the store by a man armed with a pair of scissors, who attempted to cut the victim’s handbag straps.

Police said the woman attempted to stop the man but the suspect made threats with the scissors, stole the victim’s car keys and attempted to flee in her vehicle.

His escape, however, was prevented by members of the public who were able to restrain the suspect until police arrived.

The victim suffered minor injuries.

Robert Gerald Arsenault, 27, of Clarington is charged with robbery, assault with a weapon and possession of property obtained by crime.

He was held for a bail hearing.
