The last chance for local residents to weigh in on the renaming of a Burlington elementary school is Nov. 17.

That is the date of the Halton District School Board trustee meeting that will be the final one before a new moniker is chosen for Ryerson Public School.

The board decided to rename the school following the residential school discoveries of mass children’s graves. Egerton Ryerson was a driving force behind Canada’s residential school system

The City of Burlington is undergoing a similar renaming process for the adjoining Ryerson Park.

The three final choices for a new name are Creekside, which is the name of the creek beside the school; Makwendam, the Anishinaabemowin word meaning ‘to remember’; and Parkside.

The board is encouraging delegations to next Wednesday’s meeting. The deadline to register your delegation is Monday, Nov. 15, at noon.
