The recent passing of a doctor at Trillium Health Partners in Mississauga has sparked the creation of a scholarship in his honour.

Dr. Jakub Sawicki died on July 19 after nearly a year long battle with stage 4 gastric cancer.

His death was part of recent speculation on social media after two doctors at Trillium Health Partners also died in July 2022.

“The rumour circulating on social media is simply not true,” a statement from Trillium Health Partners said. “Their passings were not related to the COVID-19 vaccine.”

Dr. Sawicki’s wife, Iris Sawicki has organized a fundraiser on GoFundMe to raise the money that will go towards the scholarship at Queen’s University.

“I will be working with the Dean at Queen’s University (where Jay studied medicine) to start a scholarship in his name for future medical school students,” Iris said in the fundraiser’s description. “In lieu of sending me flowers or donating to cancer research, please consider any size donation for one of our future doctors.”

At the time of publication, the fundraiser sits at a total of $14,841 which was raised in just four days.

Dr. Sawicki’s wife says she does not have a financial goal for the scholarship but acknowledges the increasing costs of education and encourages donators to give what they can.
