Scantily clad people running through the streets and couples having sex in cars are the by-products that private pool rentals have on the Town of Milton, claims a local councillor.

“The problem is out of control,” Ward 4 representative Sameera Ali told a recent council meeting.

In Milton, renting out backyard pools for commercial purposes is illegal, yet the problem persists, according to several residents who have complained to their councillors about their neighbours renting out their pools.

“We get a lot of complaints about people who rent out pools, that bring in party buses,” said Ali. “And there are indecent acts happening in cars late at night and there are people who are not fully clothed running around the street.”

Jill Hogan, Milton’s director of Planning Policy and Urban Design, acknowledged the problem saying the landscape for renting out household amenities for commercial use is an evolving industry.

“You blink and there is something new on the table,” said Hogan. “It’s something we have to continue to keep an eye on and constantly be reviewing.”

Violators are currently subject to local bylaws when it comes to enforcement, however, the Town is considering adopting a telephone hotline for residents to call when their neighbours are caught breaking the rules.
