A new home energy refit program could help save Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon homeowners some money on their energy bills while cutting down on greenhouse gases.

The Region of Peel is getting ready to launch the Peel Residential Energy Program, which will help homeowners in Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon finance energy retrofits to save money on utility bills. The program could save homeowners approximately $600 per year with a 30 per cent gain in efficiency, all while reducing the amount of greenhouse gases pumped into the atmosphere.

The program is still in the planning stages, but homeowners in Brampton and Mississauga can have their say on the program through an online survey. The feedback will help the Region develop the program, which could be up and running by the end of the year.

The Region of Peel says the program will help homeowners finance energy retrofits by providing information on different ways to improve energy efficiency, making low-interest loans available to homeowners, and by helping homeowners navigate the retrofit process.

Including all three Peel municipalities under the same program will allow for saved time and money, the Region says, and will also provide consistency for retrofit professionals working across Peel Region.

The Peel Residential Energy Program is funded by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to design a program for single-family homes only, but the City and the Region are looking for more opportunities to retrofit all types of buildings.
