Eighteen holes turned into a cool $1 million for Hamilton’s newest millionaire after a Maxmillions draw on August 8.
Rodger Carswell was on his way home from a round of golf with his son when he stopped at the store to check his ticket using the ticket checker.
“It said, ‘Big Winner’ and it was shocking to say the least,” he shared while at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto to pick up his windfall. “When I had my ticket validated, the clerk said my face went pale.”
The 52-year-old, who has been playing the lottery consistently for the past 20 years, returned to the car where his son was waiting. “I didn’t say anything, but he could tell I’d won. I got in the car and that’s when the waterworks started.”
He plans to put his winnings toward his daughter’s tuition. “Everything is golden,” he said with a smile.
LOTTO MAX players in Ontario have won more than $9 billion since 2009, including 116 jackpot wins and 949 MAXMILLIONS prizes. LOTTO MAX is $5 per play and draws take place on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The winning ticket was purchased at Jug City on Upper Gage Avenue in Hamilton.
