Motorists in Toronto are reminded there are some major road closures — including a normally busy highway — in effect across the city on Sunday.

For starters, the Don Valley Parkway remains fully closed from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp on the Gardiner Expressway, according to city officials.

The major highway was shut down to traffic starting late Friday night and will stay closed until 5 a.m. on Monday.

“This planned work supports the (City of Toronto’s) long-term strategy to maintain expressway infrastructure, reduce future disruptions and prepare Toronto for major events, including the FIFA World Cup 2026,” the City of Toronto said in a news release.

The DVP closure comes two weeks after the Gardiner Expressway was also shut down for maitenance work.

Such complete closures allow crews to complete work that would normally require a number of overnight lane closures.

“The Don Valley Parkway closure will also enable full-width resurfacing of sections along with work to advance two city projects — the Eastern Avenue bridge project and the Bayview-Bloor ramp,” the city said.

“The closure will also provide access for Metrolinx to carry out work as part of the Ontario Line project and Toronto Hydro to complete electrical maintenance work.”

Sunday will also see a number of road closures for the Sporting Life 10K Run.

Toronto Police said organizers were expecting around 21,500 participants, with the starting line at Yonge Street and Glengrove Avenue.

Police said the following road closures will be in place:

  • From Saturday at 7 a.m. until Sunday at 5 p.m.:
    • Bayview Avenue between Front Street to Mill Street
    • Mill Street between Tannery Road to Bayview Avenue
  • Beginning at 4 a.m. Sunday:
    • Yonge Street between Lawrence Avenue and Eglinton Avenue
    • Front Street between Trinity Street and Bayview Street
    • Cherry Street between Eastern Avenue and Mill Street
    • Bayview Avenue between River Street and Front Street
  • Beginning at 6:30 a.m. Sunday:
    • Yonge Street between Eglinton Avenue and Front Street
    • Front Street between Yonge Street and Trinity Street
    • Eastern Avenue between Front Street and Trinity Street

The race started at 7:30 a.m. this morning and finishes on Front Street at Cherry Street.
