Police have laid charges against a Brampton driver following an alleged drunk driving crash and assault in Caledon last week.

The OPP says officers from the Caledon detachment were called to Dixie Rd. near King St. in Caledon shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Friday (April 26) for reports of a collision.

When officers arrived they found two vehicles had crashed and that one of the drivers was impaired.

Police also say there was a scuffle between the two drivers and that the allegedly impaired motorist assaulted the other with a weapon. No injuries were reported in the crash or the assault but police say officers arrested a 27-year-old from Brampton.

Naveen Kumar, 27, of Brampton has been charged by police with:

  • Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Assault with a weapon

Police did not disclose what weapon was allegedly used during the incident.

The accused’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days, police said. The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville on May 18 to answer the charges. None of the allegations have been proven in court.

Police are reminding drivers to play ahead and take a taxi or public transit, or come up with another plan that takes impaired driving out of the picture.

Anyone who suspects that someone is driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs is urged to call 9-1-1 to report it or provide information anonymously by contacting Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.
