ROAD CLOSED: Month-long construction shuts roadway north of Brampton

Drivers north of Brampton could hit a detour due to a month-long closure for watermain work.

The closure started on Tuesday on Old School Road in Caledon and is part of Peel Region’s ongoing Flow program improvements to watermain and sanitary sewer infrastructure across Brampton and Caledon.

Peel Public Works is installing a new watermain and sanitary sewer along Dixie Road and Old School Road, and all through traffic from Dixie Road has been closed to around 200 metres east of the intersection.

The closure is expected to be in place for around a month, the region says. Lane reductions have also been part of the construction.

Drivers in the area are being told to follow the posted detour route.

Under the region’s Flow Program, Brampton and Caledon are getting new watermains and reservoir upgrades, along with road widening and noise wall replacements. The ongoing road and watermain work has been causing weeks of closures and lane reductions, as the water infrastructure across the region is being upgraded to meet the expected population growth.

The work is aimed at delivering the infrastructure needed to help build 1.5 million new homes in Ontario over the next decade, including 113,000 homes in Brampton and 13,000 homes in Caledon, the region says.

In 2022, Ontario passed the More Homes Built Faster Act in a push to see municipalities across the province add 1.5 million homes across the province within 10 years.

Upgrades to local water infrastructure could help the city meet its provincially-mandated housing numbers – an annual target that Brampton hasn’t hit in years.
