A section of the Credit River is “close to topping its banks” as flooding has been reported in part of Mississauga.

Ward 6 Coun. Joe Horneck shared images online Wednesday of flooding along Culham Trail, between River Grove Community Centre and Bristol Road.

Southern Ontario has been hit with plenty of rain this week and more is expected on Thursday.

The section of Culham Trail that runs behind River Grove Community Centre to Bristol Road is closed until further notice, the City of Mississauga said.

“The river is close to topping its banks, with more rain expected,” Horneck said.

The City said that water levels in local waterways remain high.

“Recent rainfall has saturated the ground, limiting its ability to absorb more moisture,” officials said.

“As a result, heavy rain may lead to flooding, fast‑moving water, and slippery banks and shorelines. For safety, residents are urged to avoid rivers, creeks, stormwater ponds and Lake Ontario.”

A section of Derry Greenway Park, located on Derry Road East just west of Goreway Drive, was also closed earlier this week due to flooding.

Credit Valley Conservation, the organization that protects natural areas and watercourses in Peel’s three municipalities and several other communities, has issued a flood watch.

Urban streams and rivers may be dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts, bridges and dams, the CVC said. People should stay away from all watercourses and keep children and pets away.

“Soil in the watershed is currently saturated and water levels of the Credit River and major tributaries are elevated and continue to rise. At several locations, water levels exceeded the top of the bank. Localized flooding risk will continue,” the CVC said Wednesday.
